Global Health Policy and Systems

Health systems around the world face increasing pressure to provide high-quality, resilient, and equitable care—especially in the face of crises, transitions, and rapid change. At Charité — Universitätsmedizin Berlin, there is growing recognition of the need to better understand how societies organize and govern their health systems—and how this understanding can be used to improve health outcomes. Currently, research in this area is dispersed across various institutes, departments, and working groups. The field of Health Policy and Systems Research (HPSR) offers a valuable framework to connect these efforts.

HPSR brings together disciplines such as epidemiology, political science, anthropology, economics, primary care, and public health to examine how actors, institutions, and evidence shape the design, delivery, and governance of health systems. This includes not only service organization and policy, but also the perspectives and experiences of patients and citizens.

Through the Health Policy and Systems theme, we aim to connect and strengthen individual research efforts across local, national, and international settings. These efforts span a range of areas, including

  • strengthening primary and interprofessional models of care;
  • analyzing the political economy of health reform;
  • evaluating health interventions and pandemic response strategies; and
  • exploring the role of evidence, expert advice, and power in global health governance.

We are also committed to contributing to the integration of HPSR into medical and public health education. In doing so, we invite researchers across disciplines to join us in building more inclusive research cultures that recognize and integrate diverse forms of knowledge and expertise.

We place a strong emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration, equitable partnerships, and bridging research and practice—both within Germany and globally
