Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin has been awarded a grant by the European Commission (EC) for the next phase of GloPID-R, the Global Research Collaboration for Infectious Disease Preparedness. The GloPID-R Secretariat will be hosted within the CharitéCenter for Global Health. The grant, under the European Union’s Horizon research and innovation programme, covers a three-year period and will fund the continuation of initiatives being conducted by the Secretariat of the global pandemic funders alliance. The University of Oxford’s GloPID-R Research and Policy Team (Pandemic Sciences Institute) will continue to pursue its role in partnership with the GloPID-R Secretariat and will continue to provide scientific and policy support for GloPID-R members and activities.

GlopID-R, a global coalition of funders was initiated in 2013 by the Heads of International Research Organizations (HIROs) in order to facilitate collaboration between major funding organizations to improve global pandemic preparedness and response capacity. From 2015 to 2022, the GloPID-R network Secretariat was hosted by the Mérieux Foundation in Lyon, France in partnership with University of Oxford and supported by EU funding.

The GloPID-R Secretariat provides scientific, strategic, organizational and administrative support for the Executive Board and the coalition's members. It implements GloPID-R’s overall communication and advocacy policy and facilitates information sharing among members, observers and stakeholders in the research funding community while raising the visibility of the global alliance and its activities. It advocates advancing research preparedness in the response to infectious disease epidemics and pandemics.

Dr. Jörg Heldmann, Administrative Director, Charité Center for Global Health: “We are delighted to welcome GloPID-R. The aims of this global funders alliance dovetail nicely with our own, and their focus on pandemic preparedness supports our engagement to promote cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral global health cooperation.”

Dr. Hans Hagen, Scientific and Advocacy Director of the GloPID-R Secretariat: “As we transition to our new setting, we remain focused on our many ongoing projects, from finalizing a clinical trials roadmap for funders to implementing the regional hub structure, developing the new Pandemic PACT tracking capability, and making progress towards a coordinated funding mechanism.”

Dr. Alice Norton, PI for GloPID-R’s Research and Policy Team: “The University of Oxford is proud to be a partner in this successful EC-funded project. We will continue to contribute important scientific and policy support to the members and the wider funders community through GloPID-R working groups, guidance, and publications.”

The role of GloPID-R is to increase research preparedness and speed up the response to outbreaks with pandemic potential. In particular, it aims to improve pandemic preparedness and response in often underserved areas including social sciences research and research capacity building in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). The organization has been involved in coordinating research funding on outbreaks including Ebola (2014-15), Zika (2015-16), Lassa (2018), Ebola (2018-19), COVID-19 (2020-2022). In 2022, GloPID-R has 33 members and 7 observer organizations actively engaged in the network: WHO, CEPI, EDCTP, ERINHA, ESSENCE on Health Research, GAVI and GOARN.
